When it comes to car seat safety, installation is everything. Even the most advanced seat can’t protect your child properly if it isn’t fitted correctly. That’s why our second tip for Child Safety Week is all about getting the install right — every time.
Why correct installation matters
Modern car seats are designed to be as universally compatible as possible, especially those using ISOFIX or seatbelt installation. But that doesn’t mean the setup is foolproof. Each seat has its own design quirks, positioning rules, and safety features that must be used exactly as intended to offer full protection in the event of a crash.
Whether you’re using:
- ISOFIX connectors
- Support legs or top tethers
- Seatbelt routing for infant carriers
…it’s essential to follow the manufacturer’s instructions down to the last detail.
Common mistakes we see (and how to avoid them)
At Car Seat Ninja, we regularly spot these issues during fittings:
- Incorrect belt routing on infant carriers – especially threading the lap belt through the wrong guides
- Handle positioned incorrectly – which can reduce vital rebound protection in a crash
- Support leg not fully extended or not resting on solid floor
- Top tether too loose or not attached at all
- Recline angles not adjusted correctly, especially for newborns
- Inserts not being used correctly - either leaving them in too long or removing them much too early resulting in poor positioning
- Not adhering to weight or height limits in multistage seats meaning a child may not be safe or secure in the event of a collision
These may seem like minor errors, but in the event of a collision, they can make a serious difference to how well the seat protects your child.
The critical role of correct infant carrier use
As we so often see incorrectly installed infant carriers during our consultations, we’ve put together a dedicated article to explore this further: "The Critical Role of Correct Infant Carrier Use".

How to get it right
- Always read the instruction manual carefully — every seat is different
- Watch the manufacturer’s official installation video, if available
- Double-check for visible indicators (like green markers on ISOFIX arms or support legs)
